Agri-Aquaculture

Agri-Aquaculture, or integrated agriculture-aquaculture (IAA), is a sustainable farming practice that combines agriculture (crop production) with aquaculture (fish farming). This integrated system aims to maximize the efficient use of resources, reduce waste, and enhance productivity. Key components and benefits of AgriAquaculture include:

1. Resource Efficiency: By combining the two systems, resources such as water, nutrients, and land are used more efficiently. For example, water used in aquaculture can be rich in nutrients from fish waste and can be repurposed to irrigate and fertilize crops.

2.Waste Reduction: Waste from one component of the system (e.g., fish waste) can be used as an input for the other component (e.g., as fertilizer for crops), reducing overall waste and promoting a circular economy.

3. Enhanced Productivity: Integrating crops and fish can increase overall farm productivity by diversifying outputs and making better use of available space and resources.

4. Environmental Benefits: AgriAquaculture can help reduce the environmental impact of farming by minimizing the need for synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, conserving water, and promoting biodiversity.

5. Economic Resilience: Diversifying farm activities through AgriAquaculture can provide farmers with multiple income streams, reducing economic risk and increasing resilience to market or climate fluctuations.

Examples of AgriAquaculture systems include rice-fish farming, where fish are raised in rice paddies, and aquaponics, where fish and plants are grown together in a recirculating system.

Louisiana Agri-Aquaculture Center of Excellence (2024)

LCCF introduces the Southeast Louisiana Agri-Aquaculture Small Business Technical Assistance and Workforce Training Center. It will be located in the 2nd congressional district.

Sustainable Urban Regeneration

Brownfields, characterized by abandonment and environmental contamination, pose unique challenges and opportunities for sustainable urban regeneration. C-BIG’s adaptive reuse strategy offers a holistic and environmentally responsible approach to repurpose these sites, fostering their transformation into vibrant, green, and community-centric spaces.
